Usually that means losing weight, working out more, eating healthier or some other self improvement. Those are all great resolutions but when making your New Year’s list don’t forget your home. There are several things we should all be doing each year that we sometimes overlook or just outright forget. Having a New Year’s resolution for your home is a great way to kick off the new year right.

Check the batteries in the smoke detectors

Yes, you were supposed to do this when you changed your clocks to reflect the time change from Daylight Savings Time but many don’t do it. If you did, good for you, it can’t hurt to check them again. While your at it sit down with your family and create a plan in the event of a fire, tornado or other emergency that may arise due to your geographical location. Practice the plan so everyone know what they are supposed to do in an emergency.

Make sure all your storm windows are closed

New homes in Minnesota are all built with combination and energy efficient windows compared to the homes built pre 1970 but I am still amazed when I see homes that have left their storm windows half open through the winter. Homes can lose 30% of their heat through windows that aren’t sealed properly. You can certainly choose the best window but if you leave it open even just a little you have wasted your money. Make sure all the windows and openings in your home are closed up for the winter.

Change the filter in the furnace

While new homes are becoming more and more maintenance free there are still things that have to be done. Changing the filter on your furnace is one of those things that not only improves the performance of the furnace but it makes the air in your home cleaner. Changing the filter is a very inexpensive way to make a big improvement on you home.

Make a list of coming projects for 2012

Winter isn’t the best time to start new home projects especially if you live in a colder climate like Minnesota and you want to do exterior improvements. However, it’s never too early to start planning the projects you want to accomplish in the coming year. Jot down a list of the home improvement projects you would like to see completed and post it someplace where you will see it. Think about how you might get the bigger projects done… do you need financing? If so then write down the steps you need to take so you don’t have to rush when the project could start. A little planning can save you tons of money.
