You’ve probably heard it a thousand times – Location, Location, Location – but it’s true. There really is nothing more important than the location of your home. Obviously there are many factors involved when choosing a location – cost of property, schools, convenience, proximity to work, property taxes, community – and these are just few considerations. All of these choices are very personal.

What might be a wonderful neighborhood for one family may be a terrible choice for another. It depends on the kind of lifestyle you lead. If you are an artist you’re going to be more inclined to find a location for you home in an area that has other artists and creative people living in it, possibly a loft in downtown Minneapolis or the warehouse district. You probably would not look for a home in the suburbs. On the other hand if you’re a corporate lawyer you might want to find a lot that is close to both downtown St. Paul and Minneapolis. If you travel considerably for work or leisure you might decide living closer to the airport is optimal.

Those examples are based on career and job opportunities but what about family? You may want to be closer to aging relatives so you can see them more often or you might want to find a lot that is located in the school district of your choice.

The point it, choosing your perfect location is the first thing you want to do after you’ve decided to build a custom home.

Another consideration is the builders you’ve chosen to build your home. Where do they build? Do they build outside of the communities and developments where they are currently building? You have many choices in the neighborhoods and communities where builders are currently building, but they are limited so check with your builder.

At NIH Homes we provide a handy checklist so you can evaluate the lot to the type of home you want to build. Not all home floor plans will work on all lots so it’s important to take the time to make sure your site is suited to your home plan.

There are other things to consider as well such as how your home fits in with the current homes in the neighborhood or how the home is situated on the lot to get the best views. If this seems a little overwhelming don’t worry, we can help.
