Brian and Jennifer had been searching for a larger home in Maple Grove close to their old neighborhood. They had built their second home there, but it was beginning to feel crowded for their family of five, and they anticipated it would get even smaller as the children grew. It was important for all of them to stay near friends and in the same school district for the kids.

“When Brian brought me to this NIH model, I immediately felt the openness and the warmth,” says Jennifer. “It felt like we were walking into our cabin – rustic with the dark woods, yet extremely elegant with all of the colors we love.  I was so impressed.”

Brian agreed. “Even before you walk into the home — when you look at the exterior, you see that NIH doesn’t cut corners,” says Brian. “They use angles to make the home look very unique, extremely creative and it’s immediately clear that it’s a custom-built home.”

As they took in all of the features of the home, it didn’t take long for Brian and Jennifer to decide that this remarkable model would be perfect for their family.

“I had always wanted to have a nice mudroom,” says Jennifer. “This house has a huge one with a large family in mind. It’s where everybody lands when they come home. There are plug-ins for our cell phones, cubbies for the kids’ jackets and lockers for their hockey equipment.”

Unfamiliar with geothermal heating and cooling systems, Brian and Jennifer weren’t sure what to expect in terms of energy savings with their new home. “I was a little skeptical about the cost savings to begin with,” says Brian, “but when I compare our monthly bills to our last home, we’re saving half to two-thirds!” And they noticed the difference in air quality, too. “It just feels right,” says Brian. “It’s not too damp and not too dry. It feels normal — and right.”

Working with NIH Homes through the sale and as they finished their lower level was a great experience, too. “Jeremy Skogquist was very friendly, warm and inviting — much like the home,” says Jennifer. “We felt a confidence and trust with Jeremy and an integrity that runs through the whole NIH organization. Even after the house was sold, the relationship is not over.” Brian agrees. “We are just important post-closing as we were pre-closing,” he adds. “Although we’re not planning to move any time soon, I would build with NIH without a second thought.”
