One of our newest homes, located at 5420 Shenandoah Lane, Plymouth, MN of Taylor Creek, is in the process of installing the Geo Thermal system. The homes built by NIH Homes in Taylor Creek and Spring Valley can all include Geo Thermal systems to save a considerable amount of money on heating bills, but just what is Geo Thermal?

Geo Thermal energy is an affordable and sustainable solution to reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

The United States has more geothermal capacity than any other country, with more than 3,000 megawatts in eight states. Eighty percent of this capacity is in California, where more than 40 geothermal plants provide nearly 5 percent of the state’s electricity. But states like Minnesota, states that aren’t known for their volcanic activity, can also take advantage of the heat trapped within the earth.

From the Union of Concerned Scientists website:

Below the Earth’s crust, there is a layer of hot and molten rock called magma. Heat is continually produced there, mostly from the decay of naturally radioactive materials such as uranium and potassium. The amount of heat within 10,000 meters (about 33,000 feet) of Earth’s surface contains 50,000 times more energy than all the oil and natural gas resources in the world.

That’s pretty impressive! NIH Homes take advantage of this heat below the surface to reduce fuel costs in our luxury homes. Below you can see the drilling necessary for the Geo Thermal system.

Geo-Thermal is cost-effective. Because of its extraordinary efficiency, any added investment related to installing a Geo-Thermal unit is usually more than offset by the energy savings. In new homes, most homeowners will experience an immediate positive return on their investment when the system cost is added to the mortgage. In replacement installations, homeowners find that any added investment over the cost of an ordinary system is generally recovered in energy savings within a few years.
